May112006Taste of Things to Come?
Looks like Adobe isn’t wasting any time expanding their product lines and jumping full force into the Web development arena. They’ve just introduced a new “framework” named Spry (more info here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/.) This is a JavaScript library that lets you create immediate, dynamic effects on a Web page using a technology known as “Ajax”—so you can get information from a server (including photos) and update the content of a Web page without having to reload the page. If you’ve seen Google Maps, you’ve seen Ajax. Adobe has a few demonstrations apps so you can see what it does:
Of course, for Dreamweaver users this is a taste of what you’ll undoubtedly see in Dreamweaver 9. Thankfully, this means that Adobe will finally put to rest the archaic, out-of-date JavaScript behaviors that have sat nearly untouched for the past few versions of Dreamweaver.

May102006WebVisions 2006
If you’re in the Portland, Oregon area July 20-21 you should definitely plan on attending WebVisions 2006. This yearly web conference explores current trends and future developments in Web design, development and business. It’s probably the best value you’ll ever find in a Web conference…only $125 (if you sign up before July 1). It’s 2 days long and includes talks from some of the Web’s most important thinkers…including me! But seriously, Web legends like usability expert Jared Spool, innovative designer Hillman Curtis, CSS-luminary Dan Cederholm, and JavaScript-guru Jeremy Keith will be there…as well as many more experts in the Web world.
I’ll be presenting a half-day “CSS Bootcamp” workshop on Thursday, July 20th. Hope to see you there.

May92006Dreamweaver 8.02 Updater
Adobe’s just released a new updater for Dreamweaver: version 8.02.
If you use Flash on your sites or you use Dreamweaver’s dynamic, database features, you should definitely update:
http://www.adobe.com/support/dreamweaver/downloads_updaters.html
This updater fixes a couple of serious issues:
SQL Injection Attacks
Apparently the code generated by Dreamweaver 8 when creating database-driven pages that add, read, update, delete info from a database is subject to what’s call an “SQL Injection” attack– this means that it’s possible for some nefarious hacker-type person to type particular code that, if input to your database, could do some nasty stuff, like ruin your database!
Once you’ve installed the updater you’ll need to reapply any of the following server behaviors:
- Recordset (when using the ‘filter’ option)
- Insert, Update, and Delete Record server behaviors and Record Insertion Form Wizard
- Log In User
- Check New User
- Master Detail Page Set
- Record Update Form Wizard
This appears to affect several server models. Here’s are links to effected server models:
Flash Code for Internet Explorer
It appears that the latest version of Internet Explorer introduces a few changes that make viewing Flash content troublesome. Because of this, if you use Flash on your pages of your site, you should update Dreamweaver then use a new “Convert Active Content” feature introduced in 8.02. For more information on this problem visit this tech note.
Misc. Fixes
The 8.02 updater also fixes a few minor bugs. For more info on all of the changes visit this tech note.
